Button And Shoestring- The Beginning
It was cold outside, snowfall had covered the ground and as the bitter wind blew, trash cans were falling over and litter was scattered along the streets. Christmas was near and the lights were so pretty with the snow glazing by and the Nativity Scene was breath taking in its natural beauty. A small crowd had gathered braving the weather and was singing Christmas Carols. As they sang a bright light occurred, very similar to the Star that led the Wise Men to the baby Jesus. The singing stopped as the carolers stood in amazement in how bright the light was and on this night, the light was like a star that none had ever seen before and its illumination hovered over the Nativity Scene. The wind had ceased to blow, the snowfall had stopped, and it actually looked like the Heavens were about to open. The crowd scattered, perhaps in fear or because it was getting late, but all went home. After all Christmas was here and it was time to be with family.
Blown by the wind, hidden under the baby Jesus manger was a button and a shoestring. Discarded by the owners but in perfect shape, the button was of a pearl color and could have easily been re-sewn to the garment he was on. The brown shoestring should be back on the boots he so amply tied for many years. Yes there they had landed, set out for trash, alone yet to maybe be found and serve again to a new coat and a new set of boots. Then the unthinkable happened.
The Star approached, the bright light coming so close to the Nativity Scene, and lo and behold an Angel immersed from the Light. Her beauty was comparable to a perfect Queen, she had been bestowed the name Beautonis, her robe of lavender flowed in the light as she hovered over the manger. Why was she here? The answer became very clear.
"Button, shoestring please rise up and take life." I guess miracles do occur, for Button, a big kind of guy, awoke, had some tiny little arms and legs, his top button holes had become eyes and the bottom two had transformed into a mouth-could he, would he actually be able to talk? He could also walk-he had legs. The tall lanky shoestring had entered a metamorphosis like a caterpillar to a butterfly. Shoe had eyes, from the tip of his string, two tiny arms that looked like twigs, yet no legs, but could still kind of slurp his way around.
Stunned and nervous, perplexed and bewildered, Button looked at Shoestring and vice versa, checked out each other, scratched their heads and together took their first wobbly foot steps. At least they tried, Button fell flat on his face and Shoestring was even worse. He did his best to stand up, but fell back like a slinky. Of course Button laughed when Shoe turned into a a string ball, and Shoe simply said in a high silly sounding voice "How does it feel to be a upside down button?" The Angel then spoke once again to these discarded clowns.
"I have been sent to give life to you. The Father has chosen you to help in His efforts to assist Him. There are too many that forget His Child at Christmas time and He is not pleased with so many that are homeless, and the evil that is destroying His Children. You have been set out for trash, your challenges will be to assist in many hard obstacles that lie before us, bring parents to a loving nature, stop the villains with guns that destroy life, distribute drugs and offer hope to kids that have been treated like you were. There will be more to follow. You have been given life, if proven worthy more powers will be granted. Beware of Icuardo, his only purpose is to destroy the good, and continue the spread of evil. His powers are immense, and his plan is for destruction."
Within a whiff of a second Beautonis was once again lifted into the Bright Light, it faded as quickly as it had arrived, leaving Button and Shoestrings alone. Shoe rapped his string around Button and turned him upright, and for the first time they talked. Button did his best, but he had a certain stutter "Idddont kknnoww hhoww mamaamme cannn rreeallly hheellp, Yyyuuuaare jjjust a sshhossttrriing. pppluuss yyoourr sssskiiinny.". His voice was a little deep, so MR. Skinny had this to add to the conversation.," You are just a fat button, I'm trim and fit, plus I don't know why He choose both of us. I only needed a new pair of boots."
The brisk wind started back and howling worse than ever, it lifted Shoestrings out of the the Nativity scene and into a very dark alley, where Shoe was able to cling to a drain hole. This guy was shaking like a string in the wind. Shoe thought he had heard a noise, like a child crying very close by deeper into the darkness of the alley. With the bitter cold and wind he was no longer a slinky but resembled a twig in the ground. Getting scarred and concerned with the faint noise he decided to call out for help. Therefore he called for Button- "help me Button, help me Button."
Well, good ole Button was sound asleep. Somehow, someway, he was awakened from his slumber, and arose. He wobbled out to listen to the distress call. Then he was reminded of Shoestrings earlier remarks that he was too fat to help and so he headed back to the cover.
But, he could not sleep. "Ookk," he said and off he went, to find Shoestrings.
